Suffering from Jetlag? Here’s how CBD oil can help

by Simy Wandering Turtle

Jetlag is the term given to symptoms you experience when flying to a new time zone.  These symptoms are caused because your circadian rhythms are disrupted. The rhythms are the natural ways your body is programmed to eat, sleep etc. over a 24-hour period. Your heartbeat, blood pressure and body temperature and more are affected by a new light-dark schedule and it can take some time for your body to adjust. There are a number of ways you can help your body to adjust and using CBD oil is one of them.

Risk factors for Jetlag

You may experience symptoms more severely if you are older and you will take longer to recover. You are more likely to feel symptoms if you cross more than one-time zone. The timing and direction of flights also play a part and when you are flying east you ‘lose’ time which can cause more symptoms than when you fly west.

Symptoms of jetlag

Everyone experiences the symptoms differently but they include:

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle soreness
  • Headaches
  • Lack of appetite and nausea
  • Disorientation, lightheadedness, lack of focus
  • Lethargy

How long do these Symptoms Persist?

The general consensus is that you need a day for every one-hour time zone you have crossed.  A two hour time difference, for instance, means you’ll take two days to recover. If the difference in time is more than eight hours you will probably take over a week to recover.  Using CBD oil is a great way of helping to minimize the recovery process.

How you can Minimize the Effects

Jetlag can’t be prevented but its effects can be minimized. There are many different ways to help minimize jet lag, including adjusting mentally before the flight by changing your sleep routine and cutting back on caffeine consumption. During the flight, you should drink plenty of water, eat light meals, avoid alcohol and caffeine and keep as active as possible by stretching. Again, on the plane, you should try to adjust mentally by sleeping if it’s nighttime at your destination or keeping awake if it’s daytime. When you arrive, it’s good to go outdoors as the natural light helps the body to adjust to the new schedule.

Why CBD oil is so Effective for Jetlag

If you just look at some of the benefits of CBD oil and then look at the symptoms caused by jetlag, you will immediately see why using CBD oil is so effective for jetlag.

Better than many prescription medications
Melatonin is often used by people suffering from jetlag. This substance is naturally produced in the body and it helps to tell your brain it’s time for sleep. It does help many people but research has shown that miscalculating when taking it can make jet lag worse.

Taking sleeping tablets, especially on a flight when you are not moving around much, can cause blood clots. They also have side-effects like headaches and make you feel groggy when you wake up.

Some jet lag remedies are available for purchase online for which you would normally need a prescription and many of them are substandard and unsafe.

CBD oil, on the other hand, does not have side effects and is a safe and effective way to treat insomnia, anxiety and other symptoms of jetlag.  It is not addictive and does not make you “high”.

CBD helps you to sleep
One of the big issues caused by jetlag is insomnia. CBD not only helps you to fall asleep but it increases the deep sleep phase of the sleep cycle.  Studies have revealed that CBD oil also has an influence on dopamine levels during sleep which leads to more relaxed, better sleep.

CBD keeps you calm
Jetlag also increases anxiety and studies have shown that CBD oil reduces anxiety, and relaxes muscles. Anxiety causes spikes in stress hormones such as cortisol and this, in turn, shuts down the prefrontal cortex. Taking CBD oil to prevent anxiety can help you to remain calm and use your brain more efficiently.

CBD reduces pain
Any muscle soreness and stiffness as a result of a long flight can be treated with CBD oil. Cannabinoids act on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is the body’s own system for regulating pain. This is why it is so effective for treating inflammation and pain.

CBD can increase energy and focus
CBD may be able to treat your insomnia but it has been shown to help you remain alert when used in smaller doses. One study has suggested that CBD activates the same receptors as caffeine but without giving you the jitters. Another study found that the increased dopamine levels caused by CBD increase alertness.

CBD decreases nausea

Studies have shown that CBD oil is effective as an anti-emetic which means it can be used for treating nausea and vomiting.

Multiple benefits of one treatment
CBD oil can help to minimize most of the negative effects of travel because of how the endocannabinoid system of our bodies operates. ECS receptors are found all over the body, including the central nervous system and the immune system. ECS receptors are found on the hypothalamus which has a great deal to do with maintaining homeostasis in our bodies. Travel disrupts our bodily systems, mood, and energy levels, all of which can benefit from using CBD as it helps to bring the body back into balance. Instead of using different medications to treat all the different symptoms of travel sickness, using CBD oil is an effective way to deal with most of them at the same time.

Concerns about legality
CBD products derived from hemp plants and containing less of 0.3% of THC are legal and you won’t have problems carrying them with you when traveling. However, CBD that comes from the cannabis plant is still regarded as illegal by the federal government in the U.S. even if it doesn’t contain THC. Some people are prepared to risk carrying CBD products derived from cannabis because they tend to fall into a rather ‘gray’ area and the TSA is unlikely to go out of their way to find them.
