CBD and its effects on glaucoma

The eye is a very vital organ of the body. The eye is said to be in good condition when all associated attributes are considered normal when measured against the normal. However sadly, this is not always the case most times. The eye is one organ that is closely related to a number of conditions that can be limiting for the affected individual.

There are a number of conditions that are associated with eye disease. A major name on this list is glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease that is commonly known as the silent thief. It is a kind of disease that most times do not come with symptoms until it has done its damage to the eye.

How does glaucoma affect the eye?

Glaucoma is a condition of the eye in which there is damage to the optic nerve of the eye. This damage occurs as a result of the increased intraocular pressure of the eye. Often times, glaucoma occurs more in older individuals accounting as the major cause of blindness in the elderly. Glaucoma is regarded as the silent killer of the eye because its damage to the eye is often time not noticed in the eye until there is a level of blindness in that eye which is always irreversible.

Because the damage done to the eye by glaucoma is irreversible, it is often time advise that regular eye checks be done in other to quickly detect an occurrence of increased pressure of the eye before it begins to cause its damage to the optic nerve.  Symptoms commonly associated with this eye defect are blurred vision; which initially starts off with a blurring of the peripheral vision. Other symptoms include headaches, eye aches, redness of the eye, nausea and vomiting.

As a result of the extent of damage that could result from glaucoma, a lot of researches have gone into detecting different means by which it can be properly managed despite its unique peculiarity.

CBD

Cannabidiol, the full name for CBD is one of the known substance that is gotten from the cannabis plant. The substance works on the body by reacting with the endocannabinoid system of the body to produce its effects on the body. In recent times, it seems like the use of has been proven to be a quite effective means in the medical industry. As such, the demand for the CBD substance has been on the rise.

CBD has its most active component known as the THC, which is known for its non-psychotic effect on individuals. The use of CBD has been tried for the management of a range of conditions with positive effects. For one, the substance is widely used in the effective management of chronic pain in individuals. Due to the highly damaging effect that glaucoma has on individuals, a lot of researches has been as to how its symptoms can be effectively managed in affected individuals; the effect of CBD is one of them.

It is very important to note at this point that there is no known cure associated with glaucoma, however, it can be properly managed, if detected early, to prevent further damage to the eye. The use of CBD has been associated with an obvious decrease of intraocular pressure in the eye, up to about 30%.

Since the sole cause of glaucoma has been pointed at an increase in the intraocular pressure which then damages the optic eye leading to blindness, reducing the intraocular pressure will, therefore, be an effective mode of preventing further damage to the optic nerve.

Specific cannabinoid receptors are involved in the ocular tissues which regulate IOP, hence the use of CBD for its management is targeted specifically at these receptors in the ocular tissues. Hence the intake of this substance is aimed directly at the ocular tissue to reduce the high pressure in them.

The CBD can be taken into the body in its various forms as management means for this condition. Some of these means are in the form of oils, pills, tinctures. Some individuals also apply this oil as a form of topical eyedrop directly on the eye to create a more effective means of approach.

Conclusion

To date, glaucoma remains one of the leading cause of blindness in individuals, especially the elderly. Hence, various means have been tested as to reducing the level of intraocular pressure of the eye. CBD, if administered properly has been shown to be an effective mode of lowering the intraocular pressure of the eye. However, some studies have also shown it to have an adverse effect if taken in too high dosage.

To be safe, it is best to consult with the physician before embarking on the use of CBD as a management model for glaucoma.
